Ten seconds is all you get

When utility power drops in the middle of a procedure, most surgery center emergency systems must restore power within ten seconds.

In that window the generator has to start and reach speed, and the transfer switch has to move operating rooms, anesthesia machines, monitors and lights onto backup power. A weak battery, old fuel or a sticking transfer switch is enough to miss it.

The result is a stopped procedure, patients at risk, and a deficiency your administrator has to explain to surveyors. Surgery center generator maintenance exists to make those ten seconds uneventful.

Why surgery center generators fail

Most failures come from five things a proper NFPA 110 maintenance program catches early.

Batteries and chargers

Risk: the generator won't start

The most common cause of a standby generator failing to start.

How we fix it: tested on every visit

Fuel gone bad

Risk: clogged filters mid-outage

Stored diesel picks up water and sludge over time.

How we fix it: annual fuel quality test

Running too lightly

Risk: wet stacking and lost capacity

Monthly runs at low load leave unburned fuel in the exhaust.

How we fix it: load bank testing

Transfer switch faults

Risk: the OR stays dark

A running generator is useless if the ATS does not transfer.

How we fix it: ATS inspection and testing

Missing records

Risk: a survey deficiency

A generator that works but has no logs can still fail a survey.

How we fix it: a report after every visit

Frequently asked questions

How often should a surgery center generator be tested?

NFPA 110 calls for weekly inspections and a monthly exercise of at least 30 minutes under load, plus annual load testing when monthly runs stay below the required load, and a four-hour test every 36 months for Level 1 systems.

What does AHCA look for in generator records?

Current inspection and exercise logs, load test results, transfer switch tests, fuel quality results and proof that repairs were completed. Missing or unsigned records are one of the most common findings.

What happens if our generator fails during a procedure?

Your team follows its emergency plan while you call us at 321-219-7471, 24/7. We troubleshoot on site and can bring a rental generator if the repair takes longer.

Do we need load bank testing if the generator runs every month?

Only when the monthly exercise does not reach the load NFPA 110 requires, which is common in surgery centers with light building loads. We check your run data and tell you.

Can you take over from our current provider?

Yes. We start with an assessment of your generator and records, then pick up the schedule without gaps.

Which generators do you service?

Kohler, Generac and Cummins as an authorized dealer, plus most other major brands and Thomson transfer switches.

How much does a generator maintenance agreement cost?

It depends on the size of the generator, the number of transfer switches and the testing your system needs. The first assessment is free and you receive a written proposal.

Do you serve surgery centers outside Orlando?

Yes. We serve surgery centers across Central Florida, including Orange, Seminole, Lake and Osceola counties.
